Co-creative Innovation with BioWin Wavre – 2021-12-02

ONCOMFORT, GIGA CONSCIOUSNESS, ISIA LAB AND PILIPILI LAUNCH A CO-CREATION PROJECT WITH SUPPORT OF THE BIOWIN HEALTH CLUSTER FRAMEWORK

The project aims at objectivizing Digital Sedation™, paving the way for the first management system for non-pharmacological sedation for use in daily clinical practice.

In 2017, Oncomfort created a medical device for Digital Sedation™, a digital therapeutic alternative to pharmacological sedation. More than 80.000 patients have already been treated with Digital Sedation™ in regular practice, demonstrating the feasibility and validity of delivering sedation during medical procedures and surgeries in a non-pharmacological way.

In the scope of the project, the consortium will assess physiological parameters during Digital Sedation™. Data mining, machine learning and AI techniques will be applied to identify biomarkers specific for non-pharmacological sedation. The project will pay particular attention to the clinical validation of the results, key indicator for clinical applicability. The project will therefore bring non-pharmacological sedation from an empirical to an evidence-based therapy, opening the way for acceptation as standard of care for the largest possible number of patients.

This project received 1,8 Million euros financial support of the Walloon Region as part of the program initiated by the BioWin Health Cluster framework. Solid partnerships were also established between Oncomfort, Pilipili, GIGA consciousness and ISIA lab in the framework of this project.

About GIGA Consciousness

The Giga Consciousness laboratory is a knowledge group established by the University of Liège, Belgium in partnership with CHU Liège entailing the collaboration between different disciplines as psychology, neuropsychology, medicine, physical therapy, and engineering.

They all have the common goal to better understand the processes of consciousness through different prisms. The group today consists of 14 scientists, 5 clinicians and over 20 PhD students, focusing on understand the neural correlates of human conscious awareness.

About ISIA lab

The ISIA lab (Information, Signal and Artificial Intelligence Lab) of the University of Mons (UMONS) has an expertise in AI but also in biosignals. ISIA lab performs research on intelligent systems for creating and interacting with media content (sounds, speech, texts, images, videos, gestures, 3D, etc.). The goal is to be incorporate our work into industrial applications, which cover smart motion capture systems, smarts spaces, speech products, multimedia navigation systems, virtual and augmented reality systems, smart gaming, BCI-controlled systems, etc.

The NUMEDIART Institute, to which ISIA Lab belongs, is composed of 10 labs, with about 15 faculty, and 60 graduate and postgraduate students. Through projects, we have equipped our labs with a large collection of sensing devices, electronic measurement systems, and computing facilities.
